I inform you that another summer intensif rroma dance workshop will take place in Belgrade, Serbia in august 2008:

***** ANNUAL SERBIAN BALKANIAN RROMA DANCE WORKSHOP *****

Belgrade, August 1st to 7th, 2008

As each year, Simona Jovic will welcome you in her country for a 20 hours rroma and balkanian dance workshop. The workshop will be teached by Simona Jovic, Dobrosav Grocic and live musicians. Join us to learn more about how to dance on the rromani and traditionnal music from Serbia, Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Montenegro and Bosnia. The workshop will be teached in english, french and serbian.

* Dance programme :

Cocek rroma dance from Southern Balkans
The biggest part of this 20 hours serbian workshop will be dedicated to this gracefull and joyfull dance, danced in the rromani communities in Macedonia, Albania, Bulgaria and south of Serbia. Danced by women and men, it remains very oriental with the big turkish influences thanks to the 5 centuries ottoman occupation of that area.

Vranjanska svita (with the tamburine)
Vranjanska svita is a dance and song from Vranje in south of Serbia. It is composed of three parts : first women dance part on the beautifful song "Sano duso" (7/8 rhythme). Second, the men dance called "Tesko oro". And the third part is the women cocek rromani dance danced with the tambourine on the 9/8 very fast rhythme. It is the most oriental of all traditionnal serbian dances and one the most beautifull.

Rromani Oros
Cercle or line dances from south of the Balkans. According to the rhythme, if it's regular or irregular, if it's 7/8 or 9/8, if it's slow or fast, the step of the oro will change. In this workshop will be teached only those danced by the Rroma in their mariages and festivities.

Serbian kolo
Kolo is the synonym for oro, also a cercle or line dance, but this appelation is used in Central Serbia and it is mostly assimilated to the "two bite rhytme kolos" and not the "oriental" ones. Lively and friendly, kolo is the dance of sharing between Gadje and Rroma that will give you the liberty to have fun at any balkanian festivity.
Valizan began his journey into Middle Eastern dance in 1995 when he joined The Society For Creative Anachronism, an educational group that learns about the Middle Ages by recreating it. Teachers Rayah Blackstar and Moria The Black instilled basic technique, while classes with the sublime Roula Said took him to a new plateau. Current influences include Yasmina Ramzy, Fat Chance Belly Dance, Jillina, Rachel Brice, Francisco Carranza and Aziz of Salt Lake City.
As one of few male belly dancers in North America, he has become a sought after solo performer and teacher across Canada and The U.S. for his powerful style and energy. He also heads up his own troupe, Shades Of Araby. Local appearances include Arabesque Dance Company's Asala, The International Belly Dance Conference Of Canada, Tribally Inspired, Northern Migration, The Dark Side, Face Zenna at the Royal Ontario Museum and The Bewitching Bellydance Ball. He also headlined In The Heat Of The Hafla in Milwaukee and appeared at Cabin Fever in Buffalo, NY.

He was recently honored to have been included in the 2007 Men Of Middle Eastern Dance Calendar put out by male belly dancer Jim Boz.

He began teaching American Tribal Style belly dance at Arabesque Academy in 2004, and became an apprentice in the Arabesque Dance Company in November 2005 when he began training in Egyptian Folklore with Yasmina Ramzy. He is honored to be a lead dancer in the Arabesque Dance Company Men's corps, and in the new project, The Righteous Rogues Of Raks.
Deniz’s Original Annual Charity event is BACK!
10th Annual Belly Boo Bash will be on Saturday, October 4th, 2008 in the Historic Oregon District.
Come one, come all for a great cause. Tickets are only $15, and all proceeds go to the charity. This year’s charity is the Lakota Indian Nation. Many are living in sub-standard housing, with no heat, running water or electricity. Many children don’t have a winter coat. The sad thing is that this is going on right here in America. So let’s do something to help out and come in your most ghoulish gear and be prepared to scare.
If you are interested in dancing in the event, please call Deniz at 937-602-3788. Spots are limited so call her quick! In addition to the workshop earlier that day, Valizan will be performing that night. The event will be held at the new PlayThink Learning location at 411 E Fifth Street in the middle of the Historic Oregon Distric. There will be plenty of parking now that the city of Dayton is sending 1.3 mil to create more places for people to park. Show starts at 8:pm and will be done when we’ve squeezed all the fun we can out of the night. Open dancing, yummy treats, raffle items, plus anything else we can think up to make the night an exceptional evening to remember.
Visit www.caravanworkshops.com to learn more.
The dance will help with self-esteem, body image, flexibility, moods, and over-all well being.

I'm going to apply for a fellowship at the end of the summer that would allow me to travel the world researching a topic of my choice. As you may have guessed by now, I'd like to look at belly dance, and more specifically at how it is empowering women on a global scale. I'm in touch with a woman in Bangalore, India, but that's the extent of my contacts! I was wondering if anybody knows of teachers or organizations anywhere in the world (excluding the US) that are working to empower women by creating supportive communities and healthy environments in which they can be free to express themselves through practicing one of the most ancient and beautiful art forms on the planet. I'm really excited about the prospect of doing this project, and even more excited about bringing what I learn to tribe and sharing it with all you lovely people! Any information would be most welcome!

...Hey guys, I'm very excited to finally be spreading the word about this. For those of you who know me or have followed my blog postings in the past, you probably already know that I've been involved in a long term project in Istanbul. I'm proud to say that Sound Fabrika Studios has finally finished preparations and we're open for business!

What we're doing here is trying to help foreigners who come to Turkey connect with some of the great musicians in the city here for lessons and music research. Right now we're running this place as a sort of guest house, but a guest house with a sound-insulated practice space, and some of the best of the youngest generation of musicians teaching and helping people like us network and get involved in the diverse and wonderful music scene here.

For a price comparable to most pensions in the area we are offering a warm bed, bathroom w/ shower, turkish breakfast and free reign to use the practice rooms here from 8am-midnight whenever classes or private lessons aren't going on. (and finding somewhere to play a davul at 11pm at night is no easy task here!). We've also spent a lot of time working out agreements with some really phenomenal musicians, and we can arrange lessons with all forms of percussion (darbuka, bendir, kudum, asmi davul, udu drums etc.) as well as oud, baglama saz, kanun, clarinet, roman violin and many more....

I'd be happy to send you more information about specific teachers and more details about our lesson programs if any of you guys are interested in what we're doing here. I'm also happy to provide some references from some of the americans that I have met coming through who have studied with some of these teachers as well, so feel free to ask. We also have connections with some prominent oriental dance teachers in the city and are happy to help dance students connect with them as well.

I got involved in this project originally because of my own experiences living in the city here my first year and trying really hard to find good teachers.... it's no easy task. I've recently been making an effort to get more video online of what some of these guys can do. You can check out Hakan, our resident percussion teacher on some of the clips I've uploaded the other day:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vh93KRxAp7w

I love being able to find these great musicians work as much as I love being able to help students find really good teachers, and I think the sentiment is shared by everyone working on this with me. I hope some of you guys get a chance to take advantage of this stuff!

Feel free to drop me an email at raghebn@gmail.com with any questions, or you can try me on tribe (though I check my account here less often lately)

Kolay gelsin!

It seems to be a very frustrating move for bellydancers and I am hoping to get some insight from those who know how to do them.
How did YOU learn to do them?
Can you briefly breakdown the components?
Like most, I can get the top part to roll, but not the bottom. Even though I can *slightly* move the bottom without the top, it doesnt exactly *roll* lol.
I figured with all the experienced dancers on here that I have seen doing massive bellyrolls down and up, that maybe those of us who are attempting to learn can pick up some tips from you!

Hello, I'm Evi Numen and I'm a professional photographer based in Philadelphia. I recently took up belly dance and I 'm absolutely enamored with it. In my search for relevant images, I noticed that there is no photography book devoted to belly dancers. Thus, my current goal is to take classic, painting-like portraits of belly dancers in full regalia, in the hopes of publishing them in a book entitled Faces of Belly Dance (not set with the title yet though).
Suffice to say, I need subjects!
If you are interested in participating, PM me or email me at evinumen@gmail.com with the subject "belly dance", your availability and location.

I will be attending Tribal Fest 8, not only as a dancer myself, but in the hopes of photographing more of you beautiful ladies for this project.
I will be in Sebastopol from Tuesday night to Sunday afternoon and I will have my studio set up in my hotel room at the Holiday Express Inn. So email me to set something up!

You can see a selection from the series here: http://evinumen.blogspot.com/2008/04/selection-from-belly-dancer-series.html and some more images at my tribe blog.

The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors, with wall mirrors in the main lodge. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures.
And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River among Redwood trees. Aquatic types will enjoy lounging by the pool. All meals are provided by our professional chef, the popular Siam Moeini, and feature a gourmet menu with an eclectic array of world cuisines and a full bar serving reasonably priced mixed drinks, beer, and wine after dinner. Evenings feature concerts and dance performances by students and staff in the open-air amphitheatre, and open-floor dancing with late-night jamming afterwards.

My friend's fiancee owns a film and animation studio in the San Fernando valley. His last film was over a million dollar budget and won tons of awards and a version of it is available at Blockbuster and Amazon.

He is filming the sequel in March and wants two authetnitc and trained bellydancers in their own costumes to perform in a couple scenes. It will be a one day shoot.
Here's the catch - it is an adult film. You can find info about the original and see the sequel at www.piratesthemovie.com.
However, the dancers WILL NOT BE NUDE. You bring your own outfits. Also, you may wear a mask to hide your identity and you need not be listed in the credits. The director, Joone, is very willing to accommodate whatever will make the dancers feel comfortable, he just really wants the film to be as authentic as possible. You may also bring a significant other or friend with you...you don't know me, but I know hollywood is full of creeps and people taking advantage of women - but this honestly isn't that situation. He just wants two dancers to come do their dances and I believe at one point there will be a sex scene going on in the background.
I know this won't be for everyone, but for someone looking to make $500 cash for a day's work, it could be a great opportunity.
The last movie, pirates, was made into an R-rated version which is available through Blockbuster and Amazon. This one will be filmed in Blu-Ray.

Anyway, if you are trained in the authentic dances and are willing to discuss the opportunity, please contact my friend Brandy (It's her fiancee) at her myspace: www.myspace.com/brandyleeledford
her fiancee, Joone, is her top friend and so you can also check out the trailer for Pirates II on his page.
I really hope that they can find the bellydancers they want because it would also expose REAL bellydancing to a whole new audience, I should think.

Thank you for reading this and passing it on to anyone you think might be interested.

I know some dancers speak/read Arabic and there are probably many more who would like to but know only a little or none, whether because they've found it too difficult, haven't had the time to pursue it, or whatever. And also some who aren't really interested.

I'd like to hear from some of you about your experiences with language. If you have good Arabic language skill, how did you learn it? How difficult did you find it to learn? How important has it been to your understanding of the dance and Middle Eastern culture in general?
If you don't know Arabic, do you want to? Are you trying to learn it or have tried to learn it in the past? What has been your experience in trying to learn Arabic?

If you just want to share some brief comments or anecdotes, feel free to post them here. If you're interested in providing some more extensive input, please PM me; I might want to "interview" you through an exchange of e-mails.

Am also cross-posting this to some other tribes.

Thanks in advance.

What's your opinion regarding so MANY dancers that show zero interest in performing to live music?
Even an amazing band will not inspire some dancers, and I'm fascinated by this phenomenon.
Is it because so many dancers have ONLY learned and performed to cds in their entire career?
I hear and see much of this as a musician, and have heard similarly from other musicians, so I'm curious as to what other dancers think who love live music, and perform to it.

Since a while I'm deeply wondering how many people over the world practice this wonderful dance, it must be millions...

I'm saying this becase i think it's time that one starts to acknowledge this dance form as a truly artistic and professional dance form like ballet, indian dance etc.. Sometimes i still sense that bellydance is considered as a show/ entertainment dance.
I sometimes study at the Libary of the dance academy in Amsterdam and the books on bellydance are themed under SHOW DANCE.
Anyway maby it's an old discussion ..... but i just wonder if anybode has any fact and figures about bellydance??
I'm planning to write an article on belly dancers who have a (chronic) illness. I have once started a topic on this before on Bhuz and I was surpriced to see how many dancers have a (chronic) illness. Since I am one of those dancers and I know I'm not the only one out there I thought it would be a good idea to share stories.

(btw I won't be using other peoples stories without permission)

I'd like to know:

1.) If you have a (chronic) illness, did you have it already before you started dancing? Or did you get it after you were already dancing?
2.) If you already were ill, was it hard to take up classes?
3.) question for pro dancers: I you were already ill before starting your belly dance career, how did you decide to go pro? How does it affect your career? Or if you got ill after you were already teaching or perforing, how did it change things for you?
4.) question for everybody: how does being ill affect your ability to dance?
5.) Does belly dance do any good for your illness?
6.) If you have anything else to mention please do so :-)
The warm summer days at Kosmos Camp are filled with music and dance workshops. Dancers learn and perform on finished dance floors. Musicians enjoy instruction and practice opportunities in our open-air venues. Both dancers and musicians study with world-renowned professional teachers in a wide variety of styles from different cultures. And all campers enjoy the natural charm of Camp Cazadero, located just an hour outside Santa Rosa in the rolling hills north of the Russian River. The site is has groves of redwoods, madrones, firs and oak trees.

My question to festival goers is - Do you feel that the availabilty of alcohol at a festival enhances your experience? Does not having alcohol affect your opinion of the experience?
To give some background this is a 4 hour event with performances and vending. There are locations near by where people could find a cocktail, but they are not in walking distance. Allowing people to bring there own alcohol does not change the fees we would have to pay and therefore becomes even more expensive than accepting donations...
Thank you in advance for your input!
