CROSSPOST- -Do you speak Arabic (or not)?

topic posted Thu, March 20, 2008 - 10:40 PM by  Jeanne
Hi all --

I'm writing an article for Belly Dance: A Raqs Sharqi Magazine on Arabic language ability or lack thereof among belly dancers. I know some dancers speak/read Arabic and there are probably many more who would like to but know only a little or none, whether because they've found it too difficult, haven't had the time to pursue it, or whatever. And also some who aren't really interested.

I'd like to hear from some of you about your experiences with language. If you have good Arabic language skill, how did you learn it? How difficult did you find it to learn? How important has it been to your understanding of the dance and Middle Eastern culture in general?
If you don't know Arabic, do you want to? Are you trying to learn it or have tried to learn it in the past? What has been your experience in trying to learn Arabic?

If you just want to share some brief comments or anecdotes, feel free to post them here. If you're interested in providing some more extensive input, please PM me; I might want to "interview" you through an exchange of e-mails.

Am also cross-posting this to some other tribes.

Thanks in advance.

I am interested - always - in the language
more recently , and I hope this isn't TOO "off topic"
I was searching ALL over the internet for translation and found one thing to be infinitely fascinating:
the propounderance of words in the Arabic language that mean "whore"!

Just my observation, while n search of words that meant "sister:" and "dancer"

    hmmmmm........

A couple of years ago I took some Arabic language classes. I haven't been practicing much so I am not conversational. I can read a little bit but that is about it. I got so busy with other things (school, mostly) that I didn't have time to focus much on it.

Now that I have more free time (and money) I plan on going back to Arabic classes. In addition I have gotten a couple of Arabic "speaking partners" (one fluent not native, one native) who are willing to help me out in conversation.

Before I took classes I thought Arabic was going to be extremely difficult to learn, especially the writing portion. However after taking the classes I found it relatively easy to get into the groove of learning it. Writing from right to left didn't feel any different than the vice versa.

It has been interesting to see some serious grammatical errors in some of your troupe and event names :)

I'd love to hear more. ;-P 2 things sound interesting. 1) what made it easier to learn? was it method, having someone to practice with? Learning course (Rosetta vs someone else's)? 2) troupe names etc. how do you find out if you have it right? (other that when you do an obvious Americanized take off). How can you check? what is a good place to go? I have wanted to learn, but am faced with trying to do so with self-learning since training is not readily available locally.

I have a gnarly commute everyday for the past 5yrs. I decided I'd do the Plimseur cds to learn Egyptian Arabic. Ha!
My Egyptian dance teacher at the time told me I sounded like a newspaper.

So I went to an online subscription to Rosetta Stone for Egyptian Arabic.......hmmmm it was for only 6mos and I think I got on about 3times not enought time to learn anything really. I don't think you can learn about sex in that short of time.

    So mine was time factors.
