My very first live teacher sucked, she was just way too into herself and really knew nothing so I don't count her and will just skip on past her to the person I do consider my first real teacher.

Jennifer Dawson is a lovely dancer. She has wonderful technique and style. Her posture is absurdly perfect.

I taken workshops with too many wonderful instructors to list them all.

Jessica Kinzbach is so beautiful and has the most charming personality a person could wish for. she's very theatrical and combines bd with pakistani, indian stylization as well as yoga.

Kathleen Hennessey is a wealth of knowledge. She has major background from Jamillia Salimpour and knows so much about the ethnic and tribal formats. She's talented and beautiful and just one of the kindest women you'll ever meet.

All located in Ohio. It's been an amazing treat to learn from each of these amazing women.

My teacher & mentor, and the reason why I started dancing in the first place, is Astryd deMichele. www.danceastryd.com
She's truly amazing, with technique to die for! She's recently returned from adventures as a performer in Cairo, where she worked with Raqia Hassan. Astryd is wonderfully generous, and incredibly clear in her instruction.

Cassandra Shore.

Simply amazing woman! Actually since I've moved away from Minneapolis, I haven't been able to find another teacher who even compared to her in the slightest. I lived in San Diego for a while and most of what I saw there was so 'tribal' style that I didn't feel like I would have been learning anything new from any of the groups that I found local there.

Here are a few links that you can read about Cassandra and her accomplishments:

My teacher right now is Mesmera, who I must say is amazing. She moves like a sanke and she is just the nicest woman! She has a great range, she does gypsy style, cabaret, afro belly, fusion, just a whole bunch of different stuff. The great thing about her is that she finds something positive to say to the clumsiest of dancers. She is great!

I'm a;so taking classes from Zahra Zuhair, who is fabulous. Her technique is amazing and she is also such a nice person.

I take tribal classes from Katherine in Silverlake and she is totally awesome, too. I feel so fortunate to have the opportunity to take classes with such amazing teachers.

My primary teacher for nearly 10 years has been Jasmin Jahal (chicago). I can't say enough about her! As a dancer, she is a true artist. Her musical interpretation is beautiful and every move she makes is the pinnacle of grace (I've seen her trip while walking and wished I could trip so gracefully!).

As a teacher she is a giver. After 10 years I'm still learning new things from her. She cares for each of her many students as individuals and encourages us to succeed and perform, whether as hobbyists or professionals. In her professional level class, she imparts her wisdom about the business, something many teachers would hold back. In class, she is a disciplinarian but also has a great sense of humor. She pushes us to be the best dancers we can be and to be dignified in everything we do.

As a woman, I'm not sure if I've met anyone who can equal her character. She is loving, kind, and understanding, but at the same time strong, powerful, and ambitious.

It's my very humble opinion, but after the many workshops I've taken and other teachers I've had, she is hands down the very best teacher I've ever had.

I consider myself very lucky here in Colorado Springs to have discovered Zafia (www.zafiabellydance.com) a little over a year ago. She is an amazing dancer and teacher with a seemingly infinite amount of patience and great sense of humor. :) In the last year, she has taught me more traditional bellydance as well as American Tribal Style. I have learned to play zills (never thought that would happen), balance a sword on my head and perform improvisational ATS. All without serious injury to myself or anyone else. :) She's the best!

Have also taken workshops from Rachel Brice, Urban Tribal, Domba and Rafi'ah. All of them were absolutely amazing!

Narah bint Durr!!!! I cannot say enough about her as a teacher!

One of the things that makes her such a wonderful teacher is her ability to teach you to understand your body's relationship to the dance! I learned that although my Maya didn't look exactly like hers--we do not have the same body structure--that it had a beauty of its own that belongs completely to me as a dancer. I do my best to pass this on to the women I now dance with.

I just had my first Private Lesson with the incomprable Delilah and I am so Happy!! I got a weight belt from her and we began our lesson. 30 min into it I could actually feel EVERY ab muscle in my body moving with the added weight. My hip work became slower and more refined. She taught me how to get the best practice in while wearing it. After we took them off my hips felt light as air. She has a similar teaching style to Mesmera's, very patient, funny and open. We were lucky to have 2 drummers play for us and the last 10 min of the lesson was just dancing around with each other. Needless to say that I am still sore - but its good! If you EVER have a chance to take either private or class with her DO IT!!! She is a living legend.

Nanna Candelaria...I practiced for five years by myself and truly thought I would never be able to get on stage and perform because of my terrible stage fright...after a few private lessons with Nanna I did and loved it! Her warm encouragement got me up there, and her system of categorizing movement in a way I could understand and actually remember instilled confidence in my ability to improvise. I believe she's teaching a workshop at Rakassah next March...bellydancebynanna.net

I'll have to second that. Xenia's a great teacher, and she's very open to suggestions from the class as well. If there's something we want to know how to do or want to work on more, she'll teach it.

Hi Woodrow, don't think we know each other - when I studied with Jane there were no men in the class and that was when she was in Minneapolis in the early 90s - if your Jane goes by the name Zarifa, lives in Charlotte, and used to work in diabetes research, she's the same Jane and please say hello to her from Tereza. One thing I liked about her teaching style was that she plunged us into performing right away - I was in my first show after taking classes 5 weeks! But performing teaches you so much, including discovering that part of the cool thing about belly dance is transmitting the joy of the music and dance to the audience and creating this whole circle of joy...only way I can describe it. What do the rest of you think?

I've been blessed living in Minneapolis where there are so many good teachers. I started with Zarifa (Jane) who is now in Charlotte NC - one dancer who saw me dance for the first time said, you must have learned from Zarifa, she really can teach the shimmy! Cassandra is another amazing dancer and I learned alot from her. Amira (Anne) taught me all sorts of complicated combinations and interesting moves - she has a real flare for that. My favorite teacher, though, is Margo - she playfully challenges even us long-time dancers and sparks the joy of dance in all of her students. And she's a wonderful dancer - full of fire and grace. And there will always be a place in my heart (hips?) for Ragia Hassan - she was in Minneapolis twice in the 90s and I fell in love! Now if I could just take a class from Mona Said....

Yeah, I have to add something on this point as well. Once you've been dancing for a while, it can be easy to forget how challenging it was when we were first learning the basic moves. It can be hard to get in the mind of a beginner and figure out what it will take to make it all *click*. I was noticing the other day- Jill is such an amazing dancer and has been doing it for so long, but she has SO much patience with beginners and really takes the time to break it down. I love to see how fast the students can advance when learning from her. Amazing!

I haven't had the chance to go to an Oasis camp yet, but if all goes well I might get to go this fall. I took a workshop from Cassandra and really liked her.
If you learned Hagallah from Denise Enan last year, you might be interested to see pictures of her troupe doing Hagallah, her website's at www.baladi.ca. I dance with her troupe and her husband Ahmed is also the choreographer.

(funny coincidence, did you know that Denise' studio is called the Dance Oasis?).

Tee hee! Me too! I remember saying things like "I am tucked" "I don't wanna do zills" "I can't do it that way" and know hear them all back at me! My poor teacher, she had so much patience. Speaking of my poor teacher she was the most amazing woman ever, Shakira Masood Ali/ Debbie Scheel from the Sirrom School of dance in Houston. She always showed up straight from her incredibly demanding day job all smiles and ready to kick our butts. Most of the great dancers that are currently performing in Houston came directly out of that Tuesday class.

I am Polynesian, so I have been dancing since I was a toddler..I have only just started bellydancing with my mom who has entered into a fountain of youth phase in her 50's! it is like having a new best friend!

I cannot compliment my teacher enough, her name is Nedra, she is in Buffalo, NY. she has worked with us to help us find our Goddess within and her classes are fun, insightful & make me feel so good about myself!

Her spirit is so warm and loving, it is hard not to feel like part of a family when you are in her class or shows, she treats everyone the same and doesn't care if you are a beginner or a pro, she says-"we are all here to dance & let go of our stresses from the week so leave your problems at the door with your shoes!" and that is what we do!

after class she is always willing to go over technique and answer questions from all of us. When she dances it is like she is floating on air...one day I hope people will look up to me and think the same. If you are in upstate NY you cannot go wrong with Nedra...she teaches at many of the gyms in the area.

I want to give props to my first teacher Mesmera (www.mesmera.com). I found her at a very transitional period in my life. I was not comfortable in my own skin, and I had very little awareness of it. She taught me that to be a woman is to dance. She emits such joy and love, that being in her class leaves me with the same feeling I have when I leave a good Yoga class - high and energetic. Her style of teaching is so simple yet thorough. She made me see that I could do it - and more importantly that I should do it for myself.
There have been many after her including Delilah, Dalia Carrella, Alexandra King, Fatheim and now Tamra Henna. Each of these amazing ladies have added such spice and magic to my dance I am grateful for each and every one of them.

Though I haven't been taking lessons long, I think that my teacher is wonderful. Kali is very supportive and works very hard to help people understand the breakdown of the steps/moves that she teaches. Even when you get really frustrated at yourself because you feel like you have two left feet, she is always there to lift your morale and to help you analyze what your doing and where you need help and practice.
The three teachers who have been most influential to me:

Shakira (OH), she was not my first teacher, but one of my earliest and the first whose teachings and artistry, realy resonated with my soul. I knew I loved bellydance, but my experiences pre-Shakira, left something to be desired, and meeting her confirmed for me that yes bellydance was my chosen path. Ive actualy studied very little with her, because i live on the other side of the world, but it was very signifigant in my life.

Delilah, has without a doubt been the most influential teacher to me, and I found her at a time when I was realy isolated from English speaking friends, I went to Maui and was blown away by all the magic, and spending time in pardadise with all the beautiful dancers, and Delilah's unique and soulful teachings in dance, and how it touches all aspects of life. Her stregnth in conviction is so attractive, I just keep going back for more. After time spent with Delilah, I am refreshed, renewed and confident with my direction in dance, and in life. She is such a Goddess!!

And Carolena (FCBD), I love her! i Ive learned so many valuable things from her, but I think what I value most, is that I learned to trust my self, and go forward with my own vision for dance, never mind what other people think.

and ive had numerous other wonderful teachers, many unknown(not famous), and many who are not 'dancers', but I truely see dance as bigger than something we just learn in a studio, and so Im always picking things up everywhere i go.

I've had LOADS of teachers during the last 15 years...

But one of the most special, inspiring teachers was Helena Cremona in Beirut. (She used to be Nadia Gamal's student and assistant).

When she shows me a new choreography I can't help standing there, grinning, think "THIS is what I want to learn!".
She has her very special way of interpreting music and uses moves in places where I would never have - but they fit perfectly.
Helena certainly has revolutionized the way I choreograph!
She also makes you work hard and you really get your money's work.
I hope to go back to her next year....

I adore my teacher, Asha Diana, of the Deva Dancers in Columbia, Mo. She's not a belly dance household name, but she's a mesmerizing dancer.
She challenges her students to advance and doesn't listen to people saying "I can't" or "I won't" or "I'm afraid to try balancing a sword on my head." She's going to teach you how, whether you think you can or not.
Despite this, she's an incredibly kind and warm person who will give whatever she can to help someone learn.

Here in Boston, I study with Seyyide (http://www.seyyide.com/ ) and Amira Jamal (http://www.amirajamal.com/ ), both wonderful teachers with a lot to offer. From Seyyide, an Amir Thaleb/Yousry Sharif protege, I get Egyptian/modern Arabic technique, an emphasis on precise isolation, a great grounding in music, the beginnings of getting a handle on how to dance to that incredibly complex classical music. From Amira Jamal, I get the widsom of her decades of both her own performing (she's old school AmCab) and her turning out of many professional dancers over the years. From her I have learned to let go and flow with the music, to be more comfortable with improvising, to work a stage/floor, and to keep working on those zills. Both of them are wonderfully supportive women who create an environment of solidarity and respect in their classes and in the Boston dance scene at large.

Bragging on teachers ... wow ... where to start. If someone other than Lissa McFadden had been teaching when I snuck out of karate class to attend her class next door I might not have stayed. She gave me my start on basics and helped me start smoothing rough edges. A BIG thanks to Marie/Rhyolyn who has taken my class suggestions for assisting my dorkiness and used it to help other students as well. Val for the workshops/classes she's taught for my troupe --- I love her to death! Folks I love from workshops who I consider my friends ... Zi'ah ... Onca ... Wiporwil ... the Oompa Loompas (love ya, Mel & Karin) ... Kamille ... Megha ... and the list goes on and on ...

Thanks for starting this thread!
Currently, I am studying with the best of two belly dance worlds: the fabulous Nabeela El Shalimar and Adriene Rice.

I remember a while ago I was watching an interview on a video with Carolena Nericcio. She described her teacher, Masha Archer, as her guru -- the person that you admire, look up to and do just about every thing they say. For me, Nabeela El Shalimar is that woman.

I've only been dancing for three years, and have been through quite a few cabaret teachers, seeing how different people teach, understanding different styles and approaches to belly dance. The main thing I wanted was for someone to be 100% honest with me about my progress in the dance -- not a teacher that says I'm doing well *all the time*, which is impossible for everyone. Her honesty has helped my dancing improve tenfold ever since I started her class. She pretty much is my cabaret guru, the person that I admire, connect with and basically follow like a groupie in a band. I'm grateful to have her!

My current tribal teacher is Adriene Rice of Troupe Hipnotica, a former member of Fat Chance Belly Dance. Let's just say this woman really knows her shit when it comes to ATS! I admire the dedication and close attention to detail she has given to ATS. Her love and dedication for tribal shows in class and her teaching. Plus she's sweet too :)

Wow, we all have fabulous teachers.

I should also brag on my other teachers.

Jennifer- my first ATS style teacher, who recently moved and broke our hearts. She had ten years of instruction with Fat Chance, and is just stunning, a wonderful teacher, and so good at breaking down steps. We were her first students, and I'm so impressed with how far she took us in a year, without rushing us or sacrificing proper technique for volume of material.

Tara- Who's moderator of the ATS and the Tribal Costuming tribes here, took over after Jennifer. I could watch her dance forever. Her ribcage is hypnotic. She's a first time teacher and doing a great job, and has already corrected a weird foot thing I was doing and never realized. Wow!

Kelly- my new Flamenco teacher, has a billion years of experience in just one little finger. She taught me a hip stretch that made me find religion.

Marjani- just moved to Tuscon, AZ, and broke everybody's hearts. We are a heartbroken studio. She lived across the street from me and is my number one dance mentor. Besides being a simply phenomenal dancer, she's one of the greatest people I've ever met, and the person I think of when someone says the words "Lady" or "Class". We carpooled to class, rehearsals, and gigs together for the last year, and I always learned something from her.

Gitana- hasn't left and broken our hearts, thank God! I've been her vending assistant, and she's always generously let me bum rides and advice at big workshops. She's taught me more about good taste in dance, as well as taking care of my body before and after workshops, than anybody else.

Renee- my very first teacher! She is the most fluid dancer I know, and the one who is best at bringing baby dancers out of their shells. I started at the Y at her classes before moving on to Mama Halimeda and the studio. My favorite moment of her class is when she was teaching us vertical hip eights:

"Okay. Your little brother has been fartin' on you ALL NIGHT. So you're going to get him back. First, you stick your butt out to the side. Then you lift it up to get him. Then, when you're done, you pull it in to finish."

I still can't do hip eights without giggling.

So far as workshop teachers go-

Rachel Brice is the sweetest person, and did more for curing my asthma than anybody else, thanks to her advice. She also said I was cute, so I died. Also, she was the first dancer I ever zaghareeted for, and as luck would have it, the first that ever zaghareeted for me. Wow!

Amani- taught me to dance to 6/8 time and was so patient in answering my many questions. She and her partner, Antonis, were adorably sweet and lots of fun, and I learned so much from their joint workshop.

Morocco- The Grand High Lady, I was so excited to be in one of her workshops, I couldn't stop grinning the whole weekend. On the third day, she was browsing around our vendor tables, looked me in the eye, and said, "Hey, kid. I wanna see you perform. You're a hot shit dancer." and I still choke up when I think about that; it brightens the worst days of my life and has given me the courage to pursue this professionally. If Rocky says you can do it, you can do it.

Artemis: I'm madly in love with Artemis, and she probably crammed in more material in a two day workshop than anybody else. I loved her teaching style, and she's made me a Turkish addict.

We are just so lucky to have phenomenal women like this around!

I'm from Milwaukee, Wi so I don't think anyone will have heard of my teachers but they have been great none the less.
I started out 11 years ago with Juliana who has given me a great foundation and instilled in me the best of the basics. I attribute my gypsy spirit to her. Next was The Nadia Sahar, who toned and refined my moves and gave my my love of Egyptian style. I will forever be envious of her no matter where she goes. My most recent instructor has been Shaia Fahrid, who bropught me out of my hiatus and on the the stage once again, I admire her preservering spirit.
But these are not the only ladies to have inspired my dance and I would like to give praise and credit where credit is due. Romnea, who has always encouraged me and flattered me has more energy than a nuclear bomb will always be an inspiration because she is so passionate about the dance that she has been on the Milwaukee belly dance scene for 20 or more years, if it wasn't for women like her, Nadia, Juliana and Zabrina, there would be no Bellydance in Milwaukee.
Ziah was the first tribal dancer i had ever seen. I got the pleasure of meeting her in 1996. She showed me that there was more to the dance then sequins and beads, she showed me the spirit of the dance and gave me a few tricks too and for that I am greatful.
All the lovely ladies of Barika have given so much of their time and energy to start the tribal revolution in Milwaukee that if you mention bellydance to someone 90% of the time they will ask you if you are a member of Barika, That is amazing, plus they are the most kind, generous, lovely, fun women you will ever meet.
Last but not least I want to mention Kaela also known as Kael. She is my current inspiration. I wish that she would share her gifts with the Milwaukee comunity more. I would love to learn from her, but she doesn't teach. But she is so bad ass and so versitle. She is a beautiful triberet soloist, a remarkable energetic caberet dancer and her gypsy style makes me want to hang up mu ten yard skirt and bury my head in shame that I would even attempt gypsy with her around. I love her and all of the above mentioned women, they all deserve to be bragged about!

Unfortunately for me, I didn't get to work very much with either of them. I got "deathly" ill and stayed in my room much of the time. I made sure to buy the camp video so I could see what I missed out on and I bought one of Cassandra's instruction videos.

My teacher's Alexis Smith (Alexia) www.alexia-dance.com

I've been dancing just under a year and she's fabulous! I'm a large girl and I never in my wildest of dreams thought that I could dance. She made me understand that it's for women of all sizes! (even tho she's a cute tiny thing!)

She takes time to help all her students, and I don't ask for help much...just struggle along in the back. She can see in the mirror the looks of confusion I get and then she helps me to find the simple version of what's supposed to happen with my feet, body, etc.

Thanks to her, I'm even going to attempt a workshop in Atlanta in Sept. This is so much more than I'd ever have expected of bashful, insecure me and my dance "career". I do wish one day to dance for more than me or class. Not as a career, but as a milestone in my life and lessons.

She's a VERY talented, classy lady who's generous with her time and energy. We all love her to pieces!

I say thank you to the generousity of the teachers of the world!

my teachers are sharon villiers and jane stansfield (phaedra and maya). they are the most amazing women both in and outside of dance. they run our troupe al ahsan together and both put so much work into their dancing that it is always a joy to dance with them. i was scared out of my mind when my friend dragged me with her to my first dance class, but i was hooked shortly after. they treat me like a daughter and have helped me grow so much as both a dancer and a person. yay for non cattiness!

Jane Archer. I can't even imagine having another teacher. She had one of the other teachers cover for her once when she was out of town, and it just wasn't the same. Love love love that woman. I also have some physical issues (compacted spine so limited flexibility) and she's the best.

my 1st teacher was Ruby Souder. She also taught Aziza. She is an amazing older lady and we should all be so lucky to have her energy and zeal when we are her age. I hadn't seen her in over 10 yrs and she remembered me! This woman not only put up with my then 3 yr old daughter whirling around in class, but encoraged it! A wonderful lady & a beautiful spirit.

My current teacher (when i can afford to take lessons) is Jane Archer. She is a wonderful open woman, who cares about her students. She's very conciencious about body position and also researched some info for me on some physical issues I have. I've also had impromtu lessons w/Carol Love who is another very giving/caring person.

I've never had an issue with a teacher "having an attitude". I'm hoping to be able to get back to classes soon, but in the meantime I'm doing drills i remember and waiting on a dvd to arrive. As it stands right now, 7 weeks post partum, i don't think i could make it through and hr class.

I'm counting workshop teachers here -
As a newbie dancer, and occasional workshop goer, there's a lot of workshop teachers/instructors I don't know...
But my *hero* is Cassandra!! I got the chance to workshop with her in Florida at Oasis Dance Camp this past February. Gads, I'd be falling down happy if I could get 25% of the grace and poise that woman possesses!

I started with Habiba in Philly, who is excellent. She was just a pleasant person to be around and taught some history.

Angie in Auckland, NZ was wonderful as well. She was very untraditional, which was fun. She had us do tribal to Tom Jones.

Garnett in Lansing I like as well. I learned a lot from her, and I liked the history aspect.

Even though this is the bellydance thread, I have to pay compliments to by Bharata Natyam, Carla in Lansing. She's everything a teacher should be: patient, kind, clear directions, lots of history, genuinely interested in her students, etc.

Hiya! We've had some amazing threads on this and other tribes, where we each discuss our biggest strengths and get to boast about, as well as some where we each discuss our biggest challenge/weakness.

How about a word for our teachers? They're the ladies (with a few gentlement scattered in there) we owe it all to. What makes them amazing?

My teacher, the Halimeda I'm bint of, is a petite sparkplug of a lady, full of energy and knowledge. I'm always astonished at how much I learn from just listening to her talk to her teacher over videos and such. She's got an enormous range, from Turkish Oriental and Rom, African, Egyptian, double veil, shamadan, Hula, and Flamenco. She's an amazing dancer to watch, and I'm always proud to see her perform. She's also the reigning zil queen of the region; last Saturday I decided to drop the zils from my solo (was feeling rusty) and a couple girls backstage gasped, saying, "You mean you're ALLOWED to do that? I heard Halimeda makes you take your zils to the BATHROOM."
