My teacher is introducing us into Middle Eastern music's rhythmology; we started with rhumba and bolero (dum dum tak tak); we need to find a musical piece of each one. would you recomend somes that you have clearly identify as either boleros or rhumbas?

Re: Rhythmology
Tue, August 5, 2008 - 12:19 AMYes, it is commonly used on slower pieces.
"Cleopatra" is often played to bolero, as is "Jemilleh".

Re: Rhythmology
Wed, August 6, 2008 - 3:00 AMI think those African-Spanish rhythms came from Cuba to the USA during the 50ies (later also Mambo and so) and were very fashionable for Hollywood movies as really erotical. I think it was the fashion of the time that's how it got to the Middle East. I would like to know something about the waltz. It's called "saraband" I heard. Where or when is it typically used? I know a beautiful routine called "Escape from Cairo" - BDSS Sonia dances to it on the Monte Carlo dvd. There is a waltz-section in it.
I'm surprised the teacher will start the rhythm classes not with the typical Arab rhythms but with the imported rhythms.
