I just won an eBay aution for some real (but lead free) kohl powder and from what I have read, you apply it by dipping a blunt ended stick into the powder and then running it between the eyelids directly against the eye.Has anyone used the real stuff (as opposed the the "kohl" pencils on the market that actually don't contain real kohl)? How do you apply it? Is it as waterproof as it is purported to be?

I'm excitedly awaiting my parcel and will do some experimentation when it arrives, but in the meanwhile I'm wondering it it really is applied directly on the eye itself.

I've got some kohl powder from Sally Hansen. I've tried it a few times, but never yet with my contacts. I think it's one of those things where you need a bit of practice to get it right (not unlike learning how to put on eyeliner when you were a teenager)

me too!!! after 30 years of "trying" to wear makeup...I cheat..I put mascara on the top and bottom lashes..then I close my eyes and smear it to put black on the edges of my eyes...I close tightly to avoid getting it in my eyes...then I reapply mascarra to the lashes again...

I use the Sally Hansen kohl everyday day with my contacts! I love it, it accutally lasts all day and I rub my eyes alot. It dose take practice to get used to putting make up in your eye, but if you can do contacts you shouldn't have a problem.

ps were did you get yours?
        I can't find it anywhere!!!

I buy mine from giftcastle5 on eBay, too. A bit of olive oil with the powder works well. But he sells the stick form, too.

Nina - do you put your contacts in before or after applying the kohl? I'm very sensitive to dusty bits in my eyes when wearing contacts, so I'm not sure what's best. I found my Sally Hansen kohl in a clearance section of their products - never have seen it since. The only reason I bought it was because I figured it was manufactured under controlled conditions using approved ingredients. I'm too leery of natural kohl made from who knows what; even if it is more authentic.

That's the same reason I bought it! "If it passed tests here then I guess it's ok....."
To answer you question: Yes i have my contacts in when I put it on. It does get on my cheeks thought so I put a little loose powder on my cheeks before applying and I brush the dust off with a clean powder/blush brush.

The problem with kohl is that the lead-free stuff is usually antimony, which isn't such a great thing to put in your eyes. Also, the ingredients lists tend to be vague or nonexistent (there is no such thing as "kohl stone!!!!") Kohl basically means "eyeliner" so there are many, many things that are described as "kohl." Some even contain menthol (ow!!!!) "Medicinal" kohl is often antimony.

I still use mine now and then, but I would really recommend that you don't use it frequently.

The traditonal way to apply it is to dip a stick into it, then put the stick in between your eyelid rims and blink. This generally causes tons of kohl to get into your eye, which is traditional but not terribly wise. I use the stick but draw it under and along the lash line, so I don't get so much into the eyes. It can drift a bit, but the stuff on the lashline can last for days.

i usually just use a q-tip, and apply it in the lash line. best eyeliner i've ever used. it stays put, and is easy to remove with gentle soapy water. i tried out the direct to eye method, and it just seemed unnecisary.

Actually the bedowin traditional way is by mixing your kajal powder with a little olive oil and it glides on smoothly. Plus you don't have to deal with the loose powder getting all over your face.

I have been using Kohl powder for years. And I love it, but it took me a lot of practice to learn how to use it. Warning, it is very hard to wash off, water just smears it. Method. Put it in your eyes when getting ready, first, then finish getting dressed while it settles. Just place the stick on your lower lid between the lashes and close your eye. Some people say drag the stick across the eye to the outside corner, but I just close my eyes and blink a few times. The tears make the Kohl spread from corner to corner. Now, finish getting dressed or whatever, if you try to clean up the eyes now you will just make a bigger mess. After it "settles" or soaks in, wash the eye area well, keeping the eyes tightly shut. I use a natural face cleanser. When you are done, the kohl now lines the inside of both eye lids and stays for 2-3 days. Note: Learning how much to use takes awhile. Too much will eventually begin to accumulate in the inside corner of the eye and looks bad !

Does the loose power form from giftcastle5 come with an applicator stick? I want to try some but I'm not sure whether I should order the powder form or the stick form...
